When you're developing your marketing plan you always want to think about what is next? What do we want our reader to do? That is why you need to create intriguing and compelling offers that motivate people to take that next step.

Marketing letters are a very powerful tool. However, they are limited in terms of what they can realistically motivate a reader to do. 

For example it is very unlikely that a single letter will:

Get a reader to call you up and hire you.
Result in a flood of phone calls of interest.
Immediately enable you to set up a large number of face-to-face appointments.

It would be nice if a single letter to a never-contacted-before prospect galvanized them into hiring you. Nice, but unrealistic.

Although common sense would dictate that this is true, it is surprising how many people tell me, We tried letters and they did not work. No one hired us as a result of our mailing.

Well what were you expecting? Unless you are marketing tree-trimming services, you are probably not going to get someone to hire you on the basis of a single letter. That is just not a good criteria by which to judge the effectiveness of a letter.

What we need is a smaller request. Something that advances the relationship, but offers better odds that the reader will say Yes. Remember that this is a lot like dating. Maybe you will get lucky with your letter and it will hit the desk of someone who desperately needs your services. But that is luck. And being lucky just is not an effective long term marketing strategy. 

Unless your letter is lucky enough to reach someone who has a crying need for your particular service, the best your letter can accomplish is to raise a mild level of curiosity. Unfortunately, marketing letters are often judged on how many meetings they generate, or how many people call to discuss their problems. From a practical level this just is not how most readers are going to respond.

You will achieve a lot more long-term success if you structure your letter so that it intrigues those who might have a little bit of interest in what you do, rather than only appealing to those with a burning need. This means that the letter needs to offer something that does not commit the reader to a lengthy meeting, a telephone call or anything that requires they actually communicate with someone. At this stage in the relationship, the reader may be interested in your services, but they are also very leery of leaving themselves open to a sales pitch.

This may limit the amount of work that is done at one time, but you will ensure that you do not have too many salespeople and not enough customers. Essentially, in MLM (multi level marketing) you will be building - or rather attempting to build - a downline. A team of people who will all be hugely successful, and who will stay with the company for yonks! We know that, in reality, that just doesn't happen.

In network marketing you're not building a "downline" - rather, you will be building a team. But there will also be problems with this method of online marketing unless we radically change our thinking and our ways.

I'm going to be dealing here with network marketing in particular, and how you can vastly improve your chances of success by implementing a method known as G.P.T.

It is of absolute paramount importance that you choose a company to work with which offers this platform.

If, in the past, or even still now - at present - you're working your tail off in an organization full of complaining reps who need constant hand-holding; where the organization is being depleted by constant attrition; where you're making a few hundred - or even a few thousand a month when you feel you should be making at least ten times more, then I'm here to tell you about the new way to operate in the network marketing world. One that works!

Firstly, wouldn't you want to be working with people who are NOT "tyre kickers"? People who are pre-qualified? People who are hungry to see your offer? People who have their credit card in their hand ready to sign up and make a purchase? Well, of course you would.

The way to do this is through a concept known as G.P.T. It's an answer to all those old problems such as small monthly cheques; vanishing downlines; griping reps etc. If you learn to implement and use this system, then it will allow you to pocket tens of thousands of dollars in weeks and months, not years! And you won't even have to build a downline!

If you are to succeed, then you must accept that MLM and network marketing as you have known it up to now is dead! In order to survive as a network marketer in the future you will need to take on board the G.P.T. concept.

G.P.T. stands for Get Paid Today! You need to find a system that will pay you a year or more worth of residuals on Day 1, no matter what happens. Such systems, such G.P.T. models are currently found in "Top Tier" opportunities. They're known as "top tier" because of the calibre of people they attract, and the significantly high incomes that they can produce compared with the old MLM model.

There are several companies now implementing this method of network marketing, and their members are reporting great success and incredible incomes. Another plus is that these successful people are more than happy to talk to you, to share the secrets of their success.

And of course, you're working with people who want to be worked with; people who are not interested in just another diet program; or more cure-the-lot health pills; or dissolve-your- body-fat-overnight-in-a tub-of-hot-water claim. These are people who are ready and willing to pay in the vicinity of $1,500 to $2,000 for a high quality, exceptionally valuable product. One that they will be proud to use, and proud to talk about. One that really does solve their problems for them.

Although you may be recommended by others, usually a good sign, meeting up with someone for the first time is often the initial opportunity to make a name for yourself, literally.

So, would it be good to know some easy steps to take to make the new relationship go well?

Of course it would. So here are ten tips to help you on your way.

Imagine it's the first conversation you're having with someone you would like to have on your side. These small steps in how you talk to, and listen to them will make a huge difference...

1. Listen well and pay full attention.

By paying attention to them they immediately feel valued and important. This is critical in them believing that you are worth the time and effort. It's also a matter of courtesy. When someone else is speaking it's the right thing to do to, listen patiently and being interested.

2. You are more interested in other people than yourself.

It's almost impossible to do completely and if you do it well, showing that it's how you are, you will make people like you more. And in the big picture, seeing this as a way of looking after your own interests is far wiser than short term actions.

3. You keep promises and do what you say you will.

By always being upfront with what you say you will do - and then delivering, you will be much more attractive to most people. 'Dependable', 'reliable' and 'committed', will be words to describe how others see you and the way you are.

4. You are a great friend when others are in need.

Whilst this needs some care (or you spend you life sorting out everyone else's problems), being there for others is a great asset to have. Their needs are often to be listened to and therefore they need someone to talk to. If you are good at this, and help them find solutions to their own problems (not you finding solutions for them all the time), they will thank you and value you.

5. You share resources and put the people you know in touch with each other.

Where you can be a resource for each other, then the network builds into a shared support and resource group. I can't think of the number of times I have been able to help someone with something that I know and can share. And I know I can now call on others to help me too!

6.You aren't judgemental, but very objective (fact-based) when dealing with others.

It's way easier to help others if you stick to fact, rather than supposition, assumptions, judgement and opinion. Hey, there's nothing wrong with any of these - in fact we all use them all the time to live our lives. It's just when you apply it to someone else directly, that you can find they resent it and the relationship falters.

7. You talk less than you listen (see a pattern here!).

This is an old and very wise concept. You have two ears and one mouth, when you want the best from a relationship for you, then use them in that proportion. You will struggle to build a business or career relationship (or any other for that matter), when you keep yourself center stage. People want to be heard and they are prepared to give a lot to have someone hear them. That's your role!

8. You make time for others when you say you will.

There ain't nothing worse than people who say they will be there and then they aren't - or they cancel last minute. If you say you are going to do something; meet someone; reply to something, then do it. As you get better at recognising those times when you miss out, you'll see the steps you need to take to avoid a recurrence. That learning will shape how well you deliver.

9. You say 'yes' when you can. And 'no' when you can't.

Sometimes when we are trying to make relationships work, we agree to things which make us uncomfortable; or we know we are going to struggle with; or we regret. In these cases it might have been better to decline in the first place. Saying 'no' is sometimes much better than 'yes'. Conversely, when someone offers to help out, or do something for you, be prepared to say 'yes' to them sometimes. It really builds the relationship, even though you might not have needed their help!

10. You are encouraging, enthusiastic, supportive and challenging with those you know.

Being a good friend or colleague used to be enough. In the fast-paced changing world we work in it's time to raise the stakes. Friends are sometimes too generous; kind even. And this means they won't call the shots when they need to. Really good friends need to make sure they are that and the trusting relationship they have with others is strong enough for them to be honest and true. You need to be able to encourage, enthuse about, support and challenge each when your partner needs it.

This number is a simple formula derived by identifying the total revenue obtained from new customer sales within the specific period of time you are assessing, divided by the number of sales within that period. This will give you the dollar amount of goods and services received from new customer sales, giving you a more complete idea of how effectively you are following up your leads, and an overall picture of the success of your relationship marketing platform. 

Once you have assessed how effectively your prospects turn into customers, and ultimately sales, you can decide if you relationship marketing scheme is the best structure for your business, or if there are changes you need to make for your relationship marketing plan to be a more successful tool for your company's overall business. This also means that you should have a checklist or process that allows your leads to be handled in the same way no matter how small or large they are. Small clients can turn into big clients and big clients can bring in new clients so always work with them in kind. 

Not Wasting Leads

Never waste a lead by taking shortcuts. Don't have people try to "squeeze in" someone to their call schedule or have a temp take care of a small lead. Use every one of them in a way that is similar to how you treat big, corporate leads. It might not seem like much could come of those tiny leads that you snag from phone book searches, but lead generation only really works when you treat every lead the same. 

If you follow these steps and create a process through which you can ensure that every lead is dynamically, uniquely handled, you can be sure that they all come back to you in the same way - with a positive or at least helpful response from the person or group you contacted. Lead generation that works is a process that will boost your business, build on tiny successes and ultimately create a route for you and your workers to succeed more than you've ever thought possible.

If you want to draw new clients and maintain a steady flow of income to your sales people while growing what your business is capable of, you need to have a good lead generation process. However, there are many schools of thought here and finding one that fits for your business and the types of leads that you generally develop can be hard. So, for that reason, it is recommended that you build on what leads you have already developed while creating a long term process with goals that can be used to shape all future leads. 

Utilizing Past Leads

The first step to effective lead generation is to use the leads you already have. Too many companies will start from scratch and throw all the old out the window. Anything you've already developed or gathered is useful and needs to be used. So, follow up on all old leads, keep track of what those leads have said and have your salespeople report back to you what their progress is. This will ensure that when you start up a new lead generation process, the new leads you gather are used equally as well.

Developing a Lead Generation Process

The next step is to create a streamlined lead generation process that will ensure you are never short of the valuable leads your business needs to run properly. To start with, create a script or hire a firm that specializes in creating leads. Having sales people cold call or work off of static lists is a bad way to start and will really only waste your resources. Rather, work with people in ways that will allow you to create and develop your lead list more dynamically. 

This also means that you should have a checklist or process that allows your leads to be handled in the same way no matter how small or large they are. Small clients can turn into big clients and big clients can bring in new clients so always work with them in kind. 

Not Wasting Leads

Never waste a lead by taking shortcuts. Don't have people try to "squeeze in" someone to their call schedule or have a temp take care of a small lead. Use every one of them in a way that is similar to how you treat big, corporate leads. It might not seem like much could come of those tiny leads that you snag from phone book searches, but lead generation only really works when you treat every lead the same. 

If you follow these steps and create a process through which you can ensure that every lead is dynamically, uniquely handled, you can be sure that they all come back to you in the same way - with a positive or at least helpful response from the person or group you contacted. Lead generation that works is a process that will boost your business, build on tiny successes and ultimately create a route for you and your workers to succeed more than you've ever thought possible.

We know these fears can hold us back from enjoying life and accomplishing great things. We also know we're actually safer when we relax and let go.

As a copywriter, I find many business owners suffer from fear of selling themselves. They read the copy. They realize they sound great. And they panic. 

Just a few weeks ago I wrote some copy for a business owner Marvin. My copy was hard-hitting but honest and down-to-earth. He's really good in his field, so coming up with benefits was easy.

What wasn't easy was convincing him to run with the copy on his duller-than-dust website.

"It's, well, sales!" Marvin said.

"That's the idea," I replied.

"It makes me sound really great!"

"You ARE really great. I've seen your work."

Finally, I showed the copy to a friend who needed Marvin's services. She was ready to pick up the phone. Then I showed her Marvin's original website. She made a face. Boh-ring!

She hired Marvin and told him why. Marvin was about 90% convinced.

I understand where Marvin was coming from. When I created my first website, I practically begged people to go away. Selling myself? No way. 

But when I began revising my sales pages, and people began buying, I saw the light. People who buy from me are smart professionals. Many have advanced degrees. They are not the type to be suckered in by a snake-oil sales pitch.

And now I encourage clients to understand what good marketing copy can do for a business.

Let's face it, most of us were taught, "Don't sell yourself. Don't brag. Don't toot your own horn."  And in truth, there's no need for hype and absolutely no reason to exaggerate what you can do.

But clients want to buy from strong, confident business people. If you have nothing to brag about, why are you in business?

Alas, many of us experience a form of copy shock when we look at a page dedicated to selling ourselves. 

"Is that really me? I don't want to exaggerate," we say.

Let's get real: the whole idea of hiring someone to promote ourselves is to, well, promote.

So, let's sell! Get excited! Share the good stuff!

When I'm finished with a copywriting project, I advise my clients, "Show a trusted friend what your hired gun copywriter has written." You can do this too.

"A little strong isn't it?"  you'll say nervously.

Almost always, your friend will say, "Not at all. That's really who you are. Very accurate."

"Not too sales-y, is it?"

"Not hardly. This is what I'd call gentle persuasion. Get a life!"
