Today’s down economy and its accompanying layoffs mean that more people than ever are trying to find ways to supplement their household income and hopefully get to a place where they no longer need to rely on a capricious employer to be financially set If you are in this position, you may have considered setting up a home-based business Here are some tips
– First of all, don’t imagine that you can just set up a website and go to town Like any business, a home-based one requires a needs assessment, and then an operating plan in order to be successful
– The first thing you’ll want to do is conduct a little market research
If your home-based business is geared toward proving a product or service to your local market (as opposed to transcontinental internet sales), you’ll need to determine whether or not your particular business fills a need or whether there are already a dozen or more similar enterprises out there If you find over a period of time that there is a real need for your business and that people will be willing to pay money for your product or service, it’s time to move on to the next step
– You need a solid business plan To barge right in without a business map to operate by is simply reckless You must first determine:
– start up costs
– what your ongoing production or procedural systems will cost
– marketing strategy and associated costs
– how your time will be used
– physical facilities needs
– what your plan is if your business suddenly skyrockets
– A prudent approach is to set aside a full 6 months worth of income for your household before starting your enterprise It is hard to funnel much needed funds back into your business when you are worrying about paying the electric bill So determine how much money you need to save for your household expenses (over and above business startup costs), and wait to start your business until you are financially prepared
– After that 6 month period is over, your business should be ready to bring in the income you’ve been waiting for But be reasonable Working for oneself takes a great amount of self-discipline: “pay” yourself a small monthly stipend to begin with and still funnel as much money as you can back into the business By the end of the year, you may even be making enough money to hire other employees Good luck!
