Recently the company I work for moved offices in London So what, you might say Well if you have ever been involved in moving an office, the staff, equipment, furniture etc you will know what a load of headaches this can bring
The requirement to move to a new office was predicted way back in 2007 We’d been taking on new staff every month for over a year and our office was already full to capacity We’d even had to rent a little space from our neighbours on the floor above Unfortunately there was no more space to rent in our office building so our landlords offered us some new office space in West London that was big enough for all our existing staff and for the new starters that were anticipated
So we started to plan our move which was successfully carried out about six weeks ago Our planning started with a list of everything we needed to address when we moved This included all of the addresses that would need to be changed with our banks, insurance providers, inland revenue, pensions and more Then there were all of our communications facilities, telephones internet access and our TV licence (which we actually overlooked) We also listed all of the services, electricity, water and gas, that would require address changes We also had to consider the pool of company vehicles that we keep for our sales and field support staff The vehicle registration documents needed to be updated for all of these
Clearly there was a lot to be considered We, wisely, consulted with a professional London removals firm who were extensively experienced in carrying out successful office moves across London They were extremely helpful, providing us with a number of suggestions to help make our move as painless as possible We agreed a weekend date for the move and took delivery of a whole load of cartons the week before to pack up our files and moveable items
One of the biggest parts of a move like this is the IT network Luckily we have a very formidable IT support team, several of whom having previous experience with office moves They installed all of the network cabling in our (brand) new offices in advance so that when it came to the move all they needed to do was connect up the servers and desktop machines They also arranged for the installation of a suitable telephone exchange with more than enough telephone sets for all employees
When the weekend of the big move arrived all staff were advised to clear their desks of personal belongings and told to report to the new address on Monday morning The London removals firm turned up bright and early on the Saturday morning and, incredibly, all the desks, computers and boxes were all moved into our new office by Saturday afternoon
The IT guys had a few headaches to iron out so they had something of a late night on Saturday But when the network and all desktop workstations had been tested successfully they celebrated with pizza and beer
Myself and the rest of the staff turned up on Monday morning to our lovely clean, new, air conditioned offices with telephones on every desk and our computer network fully working If only all removals could be plain sailing like this
