You can position yourself as the guru in your field without spending a fortune It may take some effort but the returns will be well worth your time The good news is there is no difference whether you are new at a business or you have been a business for some time and need to grow You can be recognized as expert in your field with some simple planning
Your goal is to get your message out through the eye of the media You want the media to come to you whenever they write a story that focuses on your niche topic whether it is teaching kids ballroom dancing or managing hazardous waste in hospitals
Get the word out about you and your expertise in your local area
Gather all the newspapers in your area (or the area you want to cover) This includes the daily newspapers, the weekly suburbans, the cultural weeklies, the religious, and the geographic Visit the local library to read them and take notes For every headline you see that touches your area of expertise, read the article, write down the headline, the name of the reporter, and the Email address if available Email the reporter and let her know that your read the article and if she is planning a follow up story, your area of expertise may be very helpful for her
Follow the same steps with TV reporters and radio talk show hosts
Once a month send these reporters, whether they write on the Internet or for the daily newspaper, useful information that keeps your name on top of their list A title for a list may be The Most Costly Mistakes Facing City Residents or 5 Tips for Keeping Your Kids out of Trouble
Every time you give a presentation or write a short report or put together a new category for your blog, send press releases to promote what you are doing
Use your business card When you are introduced to someone at a Rotary Club meeting or on the golf course, give that person one of your business cards It is also a good idea to use the back of your business card for other information that may attract a future client You may want to list your membership in professional groups You may want to list honors you’ve received in the last five to 10 years
Join social networks such as Twitter and Face Book You can limit your explorations to local geographic areas if that is a preference If you do business on the Interne, the Social Networks are a global experience Discover what others in your field are doing Join groups that are interested in your topic and post comments on their walls or tweet them
It may take a few months to build your reputation but it will be well worth it
